TOPS 785 had and no loss no gain week this week.

While several members weighed in our tally for the week was a tie.  In other words, as a chapter, we lost the same number of pounds as we gained!!!!

Also, because none of our losers completed the criteria for Best Loser title for this week, the best loser prize was held over to next week's qualifying winner.

We continued with the TOPS program on Stress Management

Tonight's topic was a report on the events this past weekend at Fall Rally in Saratoga Springs.

The attendees were able to recap the different segments of the rally for those of us who were unable to attend. Particularly. the tribute to our departed members was  especially moving, allowing us a moment to remember those who have passed, including our own Paulette Amyot.

Fall Rally Saturday, September 26, 2015

Miss Minnie Mouse welcomed all comers to our table at Fall Rally.

She was voted the most beautiful or would that be the "fairest in the land"?  Thank you Gigi.

Our chapter was honored several times during the course of the rally.

We were recognized for our 30th anniversary as a chartered chapter.

We also scored points for a perfect resume.  Thanks to our weight recorders Marcia D. and Kathy T.

Janet K. was honored as best summer loser with a loss of 6.75 pounds and Carol D was also recognized for her 2nd place division win at SRD.

The guest speaker was Elaine Simione of Vision Quest, who is a licensed psychoanalyst, and who conducted a relaxation exercise.  She proposed that in order to achieve our goals, we need to be in touch with our inner selves.  Her relaxation technique is another tool to be used on the journey we all have embarked upon. To be a healthier person with a happier outlook.

This week we semi finalized our representation at Fall Rally. Arrangements were made to assemble and wrap our "Kitchen Helper" basket to be raffled. We all agreed to wear Hawaiian shirts and Sandy had leis for all.  We were also advised that our chapter would be honored for the 30th anniversary of our charter. Interestingly, our current member Judy J. has been with this chapter for over 26 years. Happy Anniversary to us!
We continued our meeting with a discussion of food labels and their interpretation.  Their serving size and our serving size could be at odds. Paying attention to the labels can facilitate an easier weight loss journey.

Sandy relished in her new purchase of "The Choice is Mine", a TOPS manual. She treated us to an article on snacking strategies.   Several suggestions to keep snacking under control: always plan snacks to avoid mindless snacking, never allow oneself to get hungry among others. Per the article, some suggestions for planned snacks, peanut butter and celery, frozen grapes, veggies and dip to name a few. Selecting snacks per one's own tastes also insure staying on the path to a successful weight loss journey.

September Chapter Tally

3.75 lbs. lost

Continuing with Barb Cady's Webinar , Shelley advised we should all keep a post-it note in a danger zone.  This note is titled Food Law and can be any area on which we wish to concentrate our efforts for this week.  Example: a food law posted to the freezer door which states no ice cream or perhaps on the snack cupboard which states no chips.  It does not have to be  a negative law- drink water or eat fresh vegetables.  Barb also stated we can recruit family members by showing that the program works.

Yeah!!! TOPS 785.

Sandy and Shelley reported back on Barb Cady's Webinar for Leaders and Co-leaders. Question posed was 'Why are you coming to TOPS'?  Leaders should determine why members come each week and be able to offer some incentives to aid in the weight loss journey. Sharing one's own experience, advising to get a goal slip with a reasonable goal or reaching out mid week to fellow members may be just the incentive needed to help a struggling member in their weight loss journey.

Topic this evening as summer comes to a close and with the advent of day trips.  Simple ways to stay on your diet while traveling.  Obviously, drinking water, walking, and checking nutritional info especially in restaurants are key to maintaining a weight loss, but also, just being realistic, thinking before eating and making conscious choices will keep you on your weight loss journey. The idea is to enjoy yourself , not indulge yourself.

T. Not present for the ceremony (and sorely missed),  Weight Recorder: Marcia D. The theme for our ceremony was Hand in Hand and Moderator Carol D. started us off with a bit of nostalgia "
I remember the day I stepped across the threshold into my very first TOPS meeting. I have finally faced the fact that I needed a helping hand! I needed some extra support, lots of understanding and caring as I attempted to change old eating and exercise habits.
In a nutshell, stating our chapter's mission. She ended our ceremony with a poem:

You take my hand and I'll take yours,
And we’ll start out today,
For a helping hand is what we need
To help  us on our way.
The way to goal is a lonely road
We need someone to care.
Reach out, my friend, and take my hand,
And then we’re almost there.

Best Loser

Who is our best loser this week??????

Due to circumstances beyond our control, (an inept camera operator) the best loser this week will remain a mystery. Watch this site for an update, we can tell you that drinking water was our losers wise choice and his/hers unwise ice-cream.

We have a challenge thrown out by Sandy.  Select one habit such as drinking water or journaling or meal planning that you would like to change for the better, and concentrate on that change for a three week period. Apparently, if a conscious effort is made for a period of time then your new "good" habit becomes second nature. After the three weeks ,select another habit and soon many of the "bad" habits that contributed to our weight and/or medical issues will effect a change to aid us in our weight loss journey.

Tonight's Topic:

Six Suggestions for Vacation Eating

Even though we are half-way through the summer, it seemed an appropriate time to reiterate the several ways to curb our eating habits during a vacation.  The prospect of eating out for several meals while away from home can present problems for our TOPS members.  Meal planning, tips for restaurant ordering and healthy snacks topped the list of healthy habits for the intrepid vacationer. A variety of types of accommodations were discussed from staying with relatives or friends to hotel/motel lodging to camping. Many suggestions were offered to allow our members to effectively continue their weight loss journey while "on the road".

Topic tonight:

23  ?????

What does this have to do with TOPS members and their weight loss journey, you ask???

Well, The answer is: 23 weigh-ins until the end of 2015.

So, if at each weigh-in until December a member loses only 1/2 pound, the total weight loss would be 11 and 1/2 pounds.  Isn't that a wonderful way to start a new year?

And Tonight: 10 Diet Lessons to Unlearn.. Yes Unlearn. Seems there are some myths out there which many believe to be factual when, in fact, they are not. Ex. Hot & spicy speeds up fat burn. Not true!!!! Fat Free=Calorie Free, Not true!!!  Cabbage soup is a diet miracle. Not true!!!  These are some of the myths surrounding dieting and paying attention to any one or all of them can sabotage your weight loss.  Utilizing any of the TOPS tools or other tools available on the internet can validate whether or not a statement presented as fact is true. Many of these facts have been disproved due to later studies and testing. Rather than accepting any diet statement, investigate to the validity of the statement.

Our first meeting back after SRD. We reported back on the Lake Placid activities and updated the new dates and site for SRD in 2016.( see sidebar).
Something to consider: a bus trip is being investigated to accommodate the chapters

Our program this evening came straight from the TOPS wellness newsletter, Tips to have a slimmer July 4th BBQ.

Some suggestions Eat a light snack before you go, choose the leaner portions and focus on the people not the food.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Ann T.  Glad your here!!!

Missing from group Judy J.

And our winners are:
Pat J. our new graduate KOPS
and
Carol D. runner-up for most pounds lost in 2014 in NY state.
Congratulations to you both on your achievement

On day one, we were treated to several inspiring speakers.

Psychologist Michael Hanley PhD, emphasized exercise in his talk on "Attaining and Maintaining Optimal Weight" In addition to the right attitude and good nutrition, he maintained that exercise does not have to be in a gym but can be adapted to one's environment, neighborhood walks, bicycling hiking etc.

Our Regional Director Judy Pettit, treated us to a slide show featuring many of Walt Disney's characters.  Her talk was based on biographical information on Mr. Disney. His father discouraged him from his artistic endeavors, encouraging him to get a 'real job'. Moral: just like Mr. Disney, himself and the characters in his movies, if we set our minds to it success can be ours.

Our third speaker of the day, Chiropractor Dr. Bill Orlando spoke of "The Five Things We Must Do To Lose Weight".  He also gave us a short history of Chiropractic Medicine stating that excess weight can be a factor in joint pain and that chiropractic medicine may help in alleviating that pain.

During the break between afternoon and evening sessions Tops 785 attendees and special guests Pat J.'s husband Bob and Regional Director Judy Pettit enjoyed a wine and veggie platter (we are a diet support group after all.)
A good time was had by all
What happens in Lake Placid , stays in Lake Placid

On day two, our division winner Carol D. was honored during the morning session and in the afternoon we watched the procession of KOPS graduates, including our own Pat J.  The new KOPS were recognized and congratulated, . The lights were dimmed and each KOPS lighted a candle all around the room to signify the Circle of Hope, and the hope of each member of TOPS to attain KOPS status.

There were other activities during the two days of SRD including the KOPS Tea, a Karaoke Night, farewell to outgoing royalty, introduction of the new royalty for 2014, and the announcement of the site for the SRD in 2015  (Niagara Falls)

Another successful SRD

Thursday, June 04, 2015

Meeting cancelled due opening of SRD in Lake Placid.

A majority of our members will travel to Lake Placid to watch Pat J. and Carol D. receive the recognition they have earned for their successful weight loss.

Best Loser Division 5 with our Chapter advisor

Our 2014 Award Ceremony was held celebrating the division losers through December 2014. Carol D was biggest loser for Division 5  and cited the support of the members of Tops as her inspiration to lose and keep off the weight.  Janet K was best loser in Division 4. Her advice was to stay on plan.  She indicated the problem with any diet plan is that after a while they become boring and so the backslide begins. She indicted she has used several different plans and tries to maintain her weight from week to week. Facing the TOPS scale is her support system.

Janet K and Michael S
Best Loser Division 4 and our Chapter advisor

And to wrap up our evening, we horned in on the award ceremony to salute Marcia D. Marcia has had a "rough road to hoe" this past year and her friends wanted to make her aware that we are all thinking of her and wishing her the best. She was awarded a bucket of joy containing several mementoes of love and caring.

TOPS NY  785 will be on the road to SRD (State Recognition Days) to be held in Lake Placid, NY on Jun 5th and 6th. Most of our members are slated to go and we used this meeting to go over the program and finalize our plans to meet up as we are all staying in different accommodations. After all, we all need to know where the wine and cheese will be served. (Carol D and Sandy's room)  Once we got that settled we discussed the 2014 award ceremony slated for next week.

Two weeks ago, Shelley presented a TOPS program "The Bottom Line" touted as a quick and easy quiz.  Well, tops 785 is here to disagree. We continued  this program with questions 11 through 24 and we found this quiz to be neither quick nor easy. The quiz , however, did result in a lively discussion about the latest that  researchers are finding out about nutrition in relation to diet and disease. We will all have to "hit the books" to bring ourselves up-to-date. Knowledge is power, as the saying goes. Hopefully , this new knowledge will help us all in our weight loss journey.

Special Edition May 10 2015

They are at it again!!!
Update on our world travelers

The Disney Tinkerbell 1/2 marathon was held in California for the last leg of the Disney Princess Marathon.

Out intrepid runners/walkers were at it again.

Shelley placed 10,209 out of 11,418 entrants, running/walking this race in 3 hrs 24mins 13secs .

Michael  ran/walked his 1/2 marathon in 2 hrs 28mins 16secs placing 2997.

As a result of today's race, our exhausted racers will have to pay overweight charges on their return flight. They will have accumulated 5 (count 'em) 5 medals.  One for each of the three races and a fourth for finishing the 2 legs back to back in February in Florida and a fifth for finishing the third leg in the California location.

Way to go!!!!!!

Wise: Eat Your Vegetables             Unwise: Ice Cream   (Did she know tonight's topic?)

Eat Your Vegetables

Our program tonight answers the question "How do vegetables help weight loss?

And the answer is not so simple!!!!

It seems vegetables have a low energy density which means they provide a larger portion size with fewer calories. Many vegetables are
high in fiber which helps you feel full  longer. We also covered the best and
worst vegetables -Best: Spinach, Cab bage, Swiss Chard and the Worst: Carrots, Potatoes, Corn. The list is based on the Glycemic Index and the high Glycemic index veggies break down quickly during digestion and release sugar rapidly into our systems. The low glycemic veggies break down slowly and release glucose gradually into our systems.

For a more comprehensive list of glycemic  go to :

Our program this evening was an "open mike".  The question asked of the members was : Is competition a motivating factor for your membership in TOPS. While some members felt that competing for best loser spot each week did help to keep them on track, others voiced different reasons for their attendance at meetings. Some liked the nutrition info discussed while others felt the weigh-in motivated them to maintain their weight.
We also had a report from Pat and Sandy on the Kops luncheon which both attended.

A WINNING COUPLE

March's Best                         This week's
 Loser                                Best loser
Shelley                              Michael

Our meeting this week discussed the importance of keeping a food diary also known as journaling.  Many of us would rather jump off a bridge than write down every morsel of food we consume. However, if we bite the bullet (zero calories) and actually record our daily intake of food, we generally find many of the trouble spots in our food plan. Some problem areas are portion size, carb laden meals and/or abundant snacking . We can pinpoint problem times, i.e. after dinner snacking or office breaks.  Journaling can be an effective tool to help us attain our goal weight.

Other topics included the final list for SRD and awards for the month of March
